Volunteer Information

Helping Honduras Kids values our volunteers that come by themselves, with a friend, or with a team.  HHK has many devoted and skilled volunteers that visit from all over the world to help educate and teach valuable life skills to our amazing children, work on important construction projects, provide medical assistance, or aid in food distribution.  HHK also appreciates volunteers that desire to share and teach talents and skills with our children, e.g. computers, music, karate, athletics, dancing, sewing, carpentry, cooking, gardening, etc.

We value volunteers with a passion to teach and interact with our children.  In our Jungle School we appreciate bi-lingual volunteers that have  some fluency in Spanish. Some teaching experience is also beneficial to help plan curriculum for underprivileged kids. Minimum age to volunteer with Helping Honduras Kids is 18 years old.

Possible side trips at the end of your stay include the beautiful Bay Islands of Utila, Guanaja and Roatan; Copan Ruins, nature walks, rafting along the Cangrejal River, zip lining in the canopy, visiting the Pico Bonito National Park, island of Cayos Cochinos, the Butterfly Museum, or shopping in the open air market.

Most everyone at HHK is a volunteer, we also have volunteers that work from home that help us if they are unable to come to Honduras.

Visa Information: HHK has Safety Guidelines that all volunteers are required to follow. Volunteers enter Honduras on a tourist visa that they are responsible to renew every 90 days.

REQUIRED FORMS: All HHK volunteers will be required to read and sign the Safety Guidelines, Rules of Conduct, and the HHK Liability Waiver forms BEFORE your arrival in Honduras. The  forms should be signed, scanned and emailed back to Kim at This email address is being protected from spambots. The receipt of the $100 confirmation donation is also required online before arrival once you have your flight itinerary. You will be expected to show proof of international medical insurance that is accepted in Honduras.

Emergency Medical Insurance: HHK requires that all volunteers come with emergency medical insurance policy plan. It is important before you come that you have a policy in place. Pay your premiums and be sure you have enough money available to cover the deductible amount. Most domestic insurance plans do not cover foreign travel, so check with your plan administrator to verify your coverage. Hospitals also require you to pay up-front fees and then get reimbursed by your insurance company. Emergency Air Travel also requires up-front fees to be paid. Please plan accordingly.

Acceptable and inexpensive foreign travel insurance can be found at http://sevencorners.com/travel-insurance-plans/. If you wish to use your own insurance, please have your insurance company send us a letter on company letterhead stating that you are covered in Honduras for all medical and emergency needs. Proof of international medical insurance is required once your placement has been confirmed by us. A copy of the policy should be emailed to Kim at This email address is being protected from spambots. Individual Volunteer Positions Currently Available

Youth Activity Intern, Hogar de Amor

As a Youth Activity Intern, volunteers assist the children at the Hogar de Amor Children's Home. These children are at social risk and come from government care. Most Hogar de Amor volunteers also help at the Jungle School. The Hogar de Amor is located in La Ceiba, Honduras. Volunteers are immersed in day-to-day life with the children, and volunteers choosing this placement should be ready to help the children with their homework, tutoring in English and Math, teaching computer skills, planning different activities for the children, teaching a musical instrument,  helping with chores and reading stories. There is never a dull moment, and there is always a child ready to give or receive a hug. Typically the Hogar de Amor has 5 staff members and 2 permanent volunteers. Occasionally different groups also visit and work on construction projects and have different activities planned for the children to do. Volunteers have their weekends free to do whatever they want on their own. Some Spanish speaking is very helpful.

Teacher's Assistants, Jungle School, Grades Kindergarten - 9th

HHK operates a school in the Jungle about 5 kilometers outside of town up along the Cangrejal River. Bilingual Teacher's Assistants assist the school teachers in their classes, help the children with their homework, teach different classes as needed, and get involved in other daily activities. The volunteers work alongside the Honduran teacher to assist the children with understanding Math problems, writing and speaking English, Science projects, etc. Typically the Jungle School has 12 teachers and 1-2 volunteers at any given time. School is in session from February until mid-November. The children at the Hogar de Amor and also some of the children at the school have come from all types of backgrounds and have experienced various types of moderate to severe abuse. Sensitivity, patience and understanding are a must. Some Spanish speaking is very helpful.

Vacation Activities Intern

We are looking for volunteers who can make a commitment and volunteer for two and a half months in November, December & January. The children are out of school during this time period for their "Summer vacation". The intern would bring in activities to the Hogar de Amor for the kids to do during the week, such as sports, crafts, music, art, self-defense and other activities, etc.
Christian Bible youth camps are also welcome. The children should be tutored in English and Math during these months to sharpen their skills. We have a computer lab to teach the older children basic Windows skills, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Teaching typing is also an option.
We appreciate any activity, skill or talent you can bring to the Hogar that is wholesome, fun and educational for the children.  Some Spanish speaking is very helpful.
