Helping Honduras Kids has partnered with other organizations to benefit disadvantaged children in Honduras and around the world. HHK desires to share information that will bring about awareness of important community projects. Many of these partners provide donations, volunteers, work groups and supplies that help us to accomplish our mission.
Helping Honduras Kids mission is to improve the lives of orphaned, abandoned, abused and/or neglected children on the North Coast of Honduras. We have partners that are focused on helping others through donations, educational training, humanitarian efforts, volunteer services, micro-loan financing, self-reliant initiatives and medical/dental care services. Pressing Needs
We currently have several pressing needs for our Children's Home and Jungle School.
- Children's Home - Currently, we need to complete some much needed projects at the Children's Home, such as complete/repair electrical hookups & lighting, rewiring needed in some areas, fans for some rooms, toilet paper holders, towel racks, steel or wood shelving for indoor storage room and some rooms, laundry room sinks, clotheslines with posts, curtain rods for some rooms, plumbing help needed (many loose fixtures), etc. Please consider "sponsoring" one of these projects. Ask and we will provide costs.
- A new pickup truck.Our current pickup is over 20 years old and needs to be retired. With all the hauling we do of supplies to the Children's Home, Jungle School, and Villages, we really need a new truck to keep up with the demands. Please consider donating so we can purchase a new truck here in Honduras. The cost of a new truck will run $25,000+. Please inquire for more information.
- High School scholarships for 2021. We currently have several needy high school students. We have always believed that education is one of the main ways out of poverty. Please consider sponsoring a student. Most of the students listed on our webpage, https://www.helpinghonduraskids.org/sponsor-a-child/high-school-kids are very poor and live in very impoverished conditions. Each student needs uniforms, shoes, school supplies, funds for special projects, etc. Please consider sponsoring one or more for $39/month.
- Children's Home - A new generator to help us during the constant power outages. We have several refrigerators and freezers that need to keep running during these outages. Inquire for more information.
- Children's Home - Powdered milk for the Children's Home monthly, $200.00.
- New property adjacent to Hogar - Gravel fill, new cement block fence, gate, serpentine wire are needed for the adjacent property. This will be used for planting vegetables & fruit trees; raising chickens, cows, pigs, etc for Children's Home. Please inquire.
- Children's Home - Support the caregivers and the cook at $400/each per month.
- Jungle School - Re-painting of much of the Jungle School, inside and out. Please inquire.
- Jungle School - specific notebooks for the Jungle School yearly for all the children- $1500. School supplies, back packs, etc - $2500/yearly
- Children's Home - kitchen cabinets at the Hogar. Currently there are no kitchen cabinets and this is urgently needed. $6000.
- Jungle School - 12 great teachers for the Jungle School - $4800/month or $68,500/year. Please help us keep good teachers at the school.
- Jungle School - bottles of children's vitamins to provide a vitamin daily for 10 months per year to each child. We give out 240 vitamins daily, 5 days a week.
- Children's Home - sack of frozen chickens for a month to feed children - $200/month

Work & Church Group Opportunities
Helping Honduras Kids welcomes Christian Churches, Christian Mission teams, Medical and Dental Teams, Rotaries, University Clubs and Volunteer Work Teams to come and do Mission and service projects for HHK. Medical and dental missions are invaluable to helping HHK care for the medical and dental needs of our children.
Hogar de Amor and Jungle School
The Hogar de Amor and Jungle School are two of our largest projects. We have a lot to do at both sites and can use all the help we can get. Each work team is expected to provide supplies needed for their organization to complete these important projects.

We also ask that all Churches, Mission Teams and work groups that will be helping with specific work projects to please fundraise before you come. The more funds you raise, the greater impact you will have on the projects you will be working on.

Safety Policy Guidelines

Alert: Always be alert and aware of your surroundings. When you become comfortable and are distracted is typically when something unexpected will happen.
Alone
Never walk alone by yourself at night and when traveling at night, take as little as possible (i.e. just a few Lempira and your ID).
Passport: Make a laminated copy of your passport before you arrive. You can carry this around, as the police often say you should have a copy or your passport on you at all times. Obviously, do not carry your passport.

Backpack
If possible, don’t carry a backpack day or night. It makes you a target.
Locally grown food
All vegetables grown close to the ground should be washed thoroughly and then added to a bowl of water with a drop or two of clorox (rotating veggies) for three minutes.
Drinking Water
Drink only bottled or filtered water.
Staying cool and comfortable
Fans shouldn't be necessary to bring as the volunteer house has fans. Pillows are also available here so not needed, and bath towels are also available. However, beach towels might be a good idea.
Pictures
Back up all your pictures constantly. Cameras are often lost or stolen and the pictures are often irreplaceable.
Cell-Phone, iPod, MP3 Player
Do not use your cell phone or iPOD/mp3 player in public, day or night. One of the most common robberies in La Ceiba is someone coming up to you on a bicycle while you are walking and using your cell phone. Often times the thieves are gang members.
Being robbed
If at anytime someone attempts to rob you, do not resist! Most thieves will have some sort of weapon for show. Give them what you have that is visible and most likely they will leave you as soon as possible. Although it can seem very adventurous and independent to travel alone to other cities and countries alone, it is not recommended. Gringos traveling alone can be an easy target for thieves.
Be cautious of overly friendly people
Many people in the Latino culture are very friendly and personable, but be careful for things/people that seem “too good to be true”. If you are lost and asking directions, sometimes locals will offer to assist you by taking you to the location and then surprising you by asking for monetary compensation and not happy when you say, “no”.
Loud Noises
A personal device that makes a loud noise is never a bad idea. These items are easy to purchase in the US. Most locals are happy when tourists come to see their country and invest in their people and economy, so if you are in situation when you are being robbed or attacked, drawing attention to yourself is a good way to scare the perpetrators away quickly.
Prices
Know the general prices of things in advance (i.e. bus, taxi rides, etc.) so that a person cannot charge you a “special” price. Don’t hesitate to say something, in an amicable, but confident way, if you feel you are being over charged.
Solicitation
If you buy items from roaming vendors on the beach or in the streets, be aware that you may be opening yourself up for a lot more solicitation.
Parents, friends and family
People who love you want to know that you are doing fine. Communicate FREQUENTLY from Internet cafes or by phone so they do not worry!! PLEASE - let your family know that you have arrived safely ASAP (We don't want frantic emails from parents, please!)
Gifts for Children
Finally, many of our visitors have asked if it’s ok to bring gifts or donations for the children and Tias. Yes! It’s great (but by no means required). Look at the Wish List on the website
For your safety you will be required to follow these guidelines and your acceptance as a volunteer means you have agreed to follow and keep these guidelines upon your arrival in Honduras.
San Pedro & La Ceiba Travel Info
Most Volunteers that visit Helping Honduras Kids fly into San Pedro Sula Airport and then catch an airplane to La Ceiba or take a bus on the 190km trip. Plan to land in San Pedro Sula at mid-day even if your flight will cost a little more. If you must overnight somewhere, it will be much easier to schedule yourself to do that in the U.S. or from your native country rather than arriving after dark in San Pedro Sula. You cannot stay overnight in the airport.
San Pedro Sula
Located in the northern part of the country, San Pedro has always played a major role in Honduran history. Don Pedro de Alvarado founded the city the 27th of June, 1536. The Spanish conqueror founded it with the name of "Villa de San Pedro de Puerto Caballos" and within the next 5 years it was known as San Pedro Sula, with the name Sula deriving from the local dialect Usula, meaning "valley of birds".
Getting there
The main airport serving the area is the San Pedro Sula International Airport (SAP). Serviced regularly by TACA, American, United, Delta and Aero Honduras, San Pedro Sula is easily reached from the following North American gateways: Miami, Houston, New Orleans, New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. In addition, there are excellent connections via the Central American Airlines through San Jose, Costa Rica; San Salvador, El Salvador and Guatemala City, Guatemala. There is also daily air service by Isleña airlines, Aerolinas Sosa and Atlantic Arilines to San Pedro from La Ceiba, Roatan and Tegucigalpa. In addition, there is a first class bus service between Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, named Hedman Alas. The highway connecting both cities is one of the best in Central America and it will take you around 3 hours to travel by land between both cities. La Ceiba
Airport or bus
By landing in San Pedro Sula at mid-day, you can easily connect at the airport to the local airlines or buses that will take you to La Ceiba by late afternoon. It is difficult to have someone available to meet you if you arrive in Ceiba after dark.
La Ceiba is a port city on the north coast of Honduras. It is located on the south edge of the Caribbean Sea. La Ceiba has a population of over 170,000 living in approximately 170 residential areas (called colonias or barrios). It is the third largest city. La Ceiba is190km east along the coast from San Pedro Sula. La Ceiba was officially founded on August 23, 1877. The city is named for giant ceiba trees which grew near the old dock, which finally fell into the sea in late 2007. The city has been officially proclaimed the "Eco-Tourism Capital of Honduras" as well as the "Entertainment Capital of Honduras". Every year, on the third or fourth Saturday of May, the city holds its famous carnival. During this time, the city is host to over 200,000 tourists. (Wikepedia).

Most volunteers fly into San Pedro Sula and then take a transfer flight or bus to La Ceiba to get to the Hogar Children's Home. La Ceiba is 190 km from San Pedro Sula. A few highlights are the Jungle Rivers of the Pico Bonito National Forest and the sun and sand of the Caribbean are only 15 minutes away. La Ceiba has an airport, a bus station and more taxis than anyone can count! It also has Internet cafes, restaurants and fast-foods, ATM machines, a mall, and good medical care.

Local Transportation
Taxis cost L. 25 (slightly more than $1.50) to get around town. Traveling by local buses is not recommended for safety reasons.
A taxi from the airport to town will be about $15.00 per person.
San Pedro Sula considerations
Plan to land in San Pedro Sula at mid-day even if your flight will cost a little more. You will still have time to catch another short flight to La Ceiba or take the Hedman Alas bus. It arrives in La Ceiba around 6:30pm nightly except for holidays. The buses do not run on Honduran holidays so please check with us before making your reservations. If you must stay overnight in San Pedro Sula before coming to La Ceiba the next day, please make ALL arrangements from the USA or your native country before your arrival. You cannot stay in the San Pedro Sula airport overnight.
Arriving at La Ceiba by bus or flight
By landing in San Pedro Sula at mid-day, you can easily connect at the airport to the local airlines or buses that will take you to La Ceiba by late afternoon. It is difficult to have someone available to meet you if you arrive in La Ceiba after 8pm. We recommend you use the Hedman Alas busline, the safest and nicest busline in Honduras. You can buy a bus ticket in the San Pedro Sula airport when you arrive. Where exactly is the Hogar and the Jungle School?
The Hogar is located about 8 miles outside of the city of La Ceiba and very close to the airport. The Jungle School is located in the opposite direction and is about 20 minutes up a dirt road along the Cangrejal River.
