Honduras Housing/Accommodation Information

Most volunteers fly into San Pedro Sula and then take a transfer flight or bus to La Ceiba to get to the Hogar Children's Home.  La Ceiba is 190 km from San Pedro Sula.    A few highlights are the Jungle Rivers of the Pico Bonito National Forest and the sun and sand of the Caribbean are only 15 minutes away. La Ceiba has an airport, a bus station and more taxis than anyone can count! It also has Internet cafes, ATM machines and excellent medical care. Volunteers can live with local families, near the Hogar de Amor; at the Volunteer House in La Ceiba or at inexpensive hostels. HHK also has a few bikes that volunteers can use, as long as they agree to and follow all safety policies.

Jungle School:  If you were planning on working at the Jungle School, the best place to stay would be in La Ceiba.  We have a Volunteer House in La Ceiba for volunteers equipped with laundry facilities. The rent is $65/week.

Hogar de Amor:  If you are planning to volunteer at the Hogar, you can stay at our Volunteer House which has laundry facilities. The rent is $65/week. The children will love the attention when you visit.  It is important for volunteers to be fair and equal and not create “favorites”.  Each of these kids has had a difficult life and needs to be treated with extra love and understanding.  A few important items at the Hogar:  Quiet time is from 9 pm until 7 am.  There is no alcohol or cigarette smoking allowed on the premises. Please review            additional accommodation information below.

Hostel
:  If you are volunteering at the Hogar, another place you could stay is in a Hostel.  Here is a link to a great HOSTEL in La Ceiba that several volunteers have given rave reviews!                                                         http://www.hostallasguacamayas.com/index.htm
It has Internet Access and is in a close location.

La Ceiba Volunteer House:  We have a rented house in La Ceiba that our volunteers for the Hogar de Amor can use. The cost is $65 per week. It has laundry facilities. Volunteers purchase and cook their own food but can eat lunch (included) at the Hogar de Amor on the days that they work.  Your ‘rent’ at the Volunteer House includes lunches when you are working at the Hogar or Jungle School but you will be responsible for your own breakfast and dinner.

LOCAL TRANSPORTATION:  If you are traveling by bus to your project, the cost is L.12 each way.  That translates to about 65 cents each way.  Taxis cost L. 20 (slightly more than $1.00) to get anywhere within the La Ceiba city limits.

• A taxi from the airport will be about $15.

• For those working at Solares Nuevos, we have just arranged a ‘busito’ that will transport volunteers directly to and from the project.  The cost is just $20. Per month (or portion of a month).

San Pedro Sula day flight: Plan to land in San Pedro Sula at mid-day even if your flight will cost a little more.  If you must overnight somewhere, it will be much easier to schedule yourself to do that in the U.S. rather than arriving after dark in San Pedro Sula.

La Ceiba Airport or bus: By landing in San Pedro Sula at mid-day, you can easily connect at the airport to the local airlines or buses that will take you to La Ceiba by late afternoon.  It is difficult to have someone available to meet you if you arrive in Ceiba after dark.

Where exactly is the Hogar?
The Hogar is located in the city of La Ceiba.  Contact us for more information.
